Linda has uploaded 15 works from 2021 to create a new online gallery. Several more paintings from this year will be included within a few weeks. Linda’s inspiration for most of these paintings comes from traditional quilt block designs. Quilt designs have flourished in America for over two centuries. Strong geometric shapes, executed in pieces of plain colored cloth or patterned cloth make up most of these designs. Art history texts rarely mention the connection between the hard edge geometric school of painting that developed in the 1950’s and 1960’s and the preceding wealth of folk quilt designs. Still, the similarity of these paintings to quilts is difficult to deny.
Linda has been exploring American quilt designs and interpreting them in her paintings for the last two years. In addition to the 15 paintings in her 2021 gallery, there are 43 paintings in her 2020 gallery. Thousands of unique quilt block patterns have been cataloged. To get a grasp of the magnitude of quilt examples you might look at the “Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns“, by Barbara Brackman.
